Lokanarkavu Temple, Kozhikode

Lokanarkavu Temple is an historic Hindu temple located in Memunda four km from Vatakara, in Kozhikode District, North Malabar location of Kerala nation of south India. Lokanarkavu is a short form of Lokamalayarkavu which means lokam (international) made of mala (mountain), aaru (river) and kavu (grove). The temple committed to goddess Durga has remarkable historical importance as Thacholi Othenan, the legendary martial hero of Kerala, used to worship right here each day.

Thirty days Mandala Utsavam in Malayalam month Vrischikam (November–December) and pooram in Malayalam month meenam (March–April) are the yearly festival at the Lokanarkavu Bhagavathy Temple. This is the best temple in which a unusual people dance known as Poorakkali is supplied throughout gala’s. The dance, resembles the martial art Kalarippayattu. Even today, all Kalaripayattu artists are seeking for the advantages of the deity earlier than their debut due to the affiliation of Lokanarkavu Temple with legendary hero thacholi othenan. Yet another story is that a set of merchants of Kollam , belonging to caste of Ravari Nayars (see the write up on Pisharikkavu) migrated to Malabar and brought with them the idol of this Goddess. It appears they wanted to settle in a place , wherein human beings are trustworthy. Anywhere they went they gave a pot of Sugar for secure maintaining in a residence. In the sugar , they concealed a bar of gold. Anywhere they gave this, the humans stole the gold bar and again the vessel to them. But in Badagara , a circle of relatives known as “Puthu panathu”, returned the gold at the side of the sugar. It seems those Ravari nayars settled down in that location and constructed a temple for his or her goddess in Lokanar Kovil. It appears later this organization of humans had a quarrel with the local population and shifted to a place called Nada Puram. It is also believed that this whole community was converted in to Islam after the conquest by means of Tipu Sultan.

There may be one every year pooram competition inside the month of Meenam (March-April) and it’s miles celebrated for a length of eight days at the fifth and 6th day there may be a dance through Theyyambadi kurup which draws a big crowd. At the 8th day there’s arattu( Ceremonial tub of the deity within the river). On this day the Goddess is taken to the close by Shiva temple and the story of the Goddess is sung there (Poora Pattu). There may be additionally performance of a dance shape reminiscent of Kalari Payithu known as “Poora Kali” The month of Vruschigam (October-Novamber ) is well known as “Mandala Vilakku” . The three thousand oil lamps which can be there within the outer partitions of the temple are lit in the course of this time.
